Athens When Greek Defense Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos visited his US counterpart Lloyd Austin in Washington in mid-July, he made a detour to Fort Worth in Texas. There, the armaments company Lockheed Martin manufactures the F-35 fighter jet.
For Panagiotopoulos it was an important photo opportunity. Greece is currently negotiating with the United States for the delivery of 20 of the state-of-the-art stealth jets. Athens would like to take up options for a further 20 machines. The government of the conservative Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is thus heralding the next round of the largest armaments program in the country’s recent history.
