Berlin While the Ukraine war is already raging in the seventh month in the west, Vladimir Putin watched his army practicing in a good mood in the far east of Russia at the beginning of September. In addition to soldiers from Belarus, Laos and India, Chinese troops also took part in the “Vostok 2022” military maneuvers.
The exercise, which extended into the Sea of Japan, raised fears in the West of a new military axis. What will happen if one day Russia and China join forces? How do they stand in terms of forces compared to the USA and NATO?
According to a paper by the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) published in March, China has massively upgraded its nuclear power in recent years. According to estimates by independent experts from the Federation of American Scientists (FAS), the People’s Republic had over 200 nuclear warheads in 2008 – and thus fewer than France or Great Britain – by 2020 the arsenal had grown to 350 warheads.
