Apple is working on periscope lens for iPhone 15 Pro!
According to the leaks, Apple is in talks with Lante Optics, which is expected to be the main supplier of periscope lenses to be used in 2023 iPhones. In fact, it is said that the company has already taken component samples and the final decision will be made by May.
If the components are approved, Apple will include a periscope lens capable of 5x optical zoom on the high-end models of the 2023 iPhone series, which we assume will be called iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. It is also said that Lante Optics is likely to supply more than 100 million components to Apple, which will have a huge positive impact on the company’s revenues.
In fact, this leak that the company will add a periscope lens to the iPhone 15 is not new news. An analyst named Ming-Chi Kuo also said in a previous report that Apple is trying to add a periscope lens to better optical zoom iPhones.
When the periscope lens is mentioned, the first thing that comes to mind is the system in submarines, where we can view the surroundings without rising above the water level when necessary. We can say that this technology is used in smartphones as well. The mirrors in the lens reflect the image (light) received from the outside onto the sensor with a 90 degree refraction. In this way, we can extend the distance between the sensor and the lens and provide optical convergence.
In the past years, a similar technology was used in smartphones made by Samsung and Huawei, which provide up to 100x zoom. Of course, they actually did this by optically zooming up to 10x, and then digitally zooming in at 10x.
Therefore, it is estimated that the highest zoom level on the Apple side will be 50x. However, we can say that this is a huge improvement as it will be above the 2x and 3x optical zoom currently used. We already know that in the iPhone 14 models that Apple will introduce in the second half of this year, it will use its new 48 Megapixel cameras that can shoot 8K video. Therefore, the iPhone 15 will have a very different system compared to today.
