Apple, Google and Microsoft took a joint decision to make the internet more secure. However, today they said they will increase their support for the passwordless login standard created by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium.
Passwordless login period begins
If this feature is implemented, websites and applications will provide people with consistent, secure and password-free logins for their devices and platforms. Because the password authentication system we currently use is actually one of the biggest security problems on the internet.
For this reason, the FIDO Alliance and W3C, in which hundreds of technology companies from all over the world, including Apple, Google and Microsoft, participate, can have a greater impact on our lives than we think. Moreover, some of the big companies that pioneered this partnership have started to make plans to carry the new security technologies developed to their platforms.
In fact, users can already use this new feature from the FIDO Alliance to enable passwordless login on their devices. But let’s say that it is not at the desired level for now. Because each website and application needs to be logged in one by one with each device. However, let’s say that the work has been accelerated in order to eliminate this unnecessary workload.
Making a statement on the subject, Andrew Shikiar, CMO of FIDO Alliance, said:
‘Simple, stronger authentication’ isn’t just the FIDO Alliance’s motto. It has also been a guiding principle for our specifications and distribution guidelines. Ubiquity is critical to see multi-factor authentication widely adopted. We applaud Apple, Google and Microsoft for helping make this goal a reality by committing to supporting this user-friendly innovation across their platforms and products.
Another name making a statement on the subject, Kurt Knight, Apple’s Senior Director of Platform Product Marketing, said:
Just as we design our products to be intuitive and capable, we design them to be private and secure. Working with the industry to create new, more secure login methods that offer better protection and eliminate password vulnerabilities is central to our commitment to creating products that offer maximum security and a transparent user experience.
Mark Risher, Senior Director of Product Management at Google, also shared:
This milestone is a testament to industry-wide collaboration to increase protection and eliminate legacy password-based authentication. For Google, it represents nearly a decade of work with FIDO as part of our continuous innovation towards a password-free future. We look forward to making the FIDO-based technology available on Chrome, ChromeOS, Android and other platforms. We encourage app and website developers to embrace it. So people around the world can safely avoid password risk and hassle.
Finally, Alex Simons, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Identity Program Management, expressed the collaboration with these words:
The full transition to a password-free world will begin with consumers making it a natural part of their lives. Any viable solution should be more secure, easier, and faster than today’s passwords and legacy multi-factor authentication methods. Working together as a cross-platform community, we can finally achieve this vision and make significant progress towards eliminating passwords. We see a bright future for FIDO-based credentials in both consumer and enterprise scenarios, and we will continue to build support across Microsoft applications and services.
