“Anyone planning a house now has no idea what to expect”

Berlin Mr. Traed, in 2021 there were over 16 million single-family homes, including semi-detached houses, in Germany. Roughly around 100,000 have been added every year since 2001. Apparently, owning a home remains a lasting goal in life for Germans. Why?
It’s not just a life goal. Living in rural areas is hardly possible any other way. There is no apartment building structure like in Hamburg or Berlin. It is therefore not surprising that half of the people live in houses.

But the desire to build a house also grows out of a social narrative.
Sure: fathering children, planting trees, building a house are considered the three big to-dos. We hear that again and again in our culture. Having your own house means success, both outwardly and for yourself. I have created possessions that I can still use.
