There has been fierce competition in the smartphone world in recent years. However, with the development of technology, the processors in smartphones create a separate field of competition. TSMC, one of the most important names in this field, wants to strengthen its position with the innovations it works on. The company, which has been working on 2nm processors for a while, has been dealing with some problems.
TSMC may postpone 2nm processor production to 2026
Processors in the smartphone world are becoming increasingly minimal. Currently, many companies’ flagship phones use processors that go through the 4nm production process. The Pro models of the iPhone 15 series, introduced in recent weeks, were the first models in the industry to use 3nm processors.
Companies such as TSMC and Samsung have created plans to begin the 2nm manufacturing process. Both companies wanted to start the 2nm production process in 2025. However, according to the latest reports, TSMC will postpone production for another year.
The reason for the postponement is the disruption in the construction timeline of a facility in Hsinchu Baosha city in Taiwan, which covers a large part of the production line. However, the company opened its new global R&D center here on July 28.
However, according to some claims, one of the reasons for this delay is that the company feels under pressure. Intel, which plans to introduce Power Via technology next year, will introduce the 18A node (1.8nm) in 2025. Samsung will switch to 2nm production in 2025 and 1.4nm production in 2027. The company wants to gain an advantage by conducting a new study with the postponement.
On the other hand, the R&D center spreads over a fairly large area. The center covers an area of 30 thousand square meters. It will also use sustainable energy. The roof of the center will be equipped with solar panels. Thus, it will be able to produce 287 kilowatts of electricity under peak conditions.
