Frankfurt Alternative investments beyond the stock exchanges and bond markets were reserved for institutional investors for decades. Company investments (private equity), infrastructure investments, socially used real estate as well as investments in credit funds (private debt) required multi-million dollar commitments by professionals – private investors were left out of these exclusive circles.
This is what the European Union called for, which launched a new product through an EU regulation – the European Long Term Investment Fund (Eltif).
The products are therefore long-term funds. With the framework for Eltif products, which has been in effect since December 2015, the Brussels EU Commission wants to stimulate long-term investments. Investors should finance medium-sized companies, roads and bridges, airports and hospitals – and be won over to closed-end funds whose reputation was badly damaged for a while after numerous bankruptcies.
