Geneva One day before the deadline comes the good news about the Black Sea Grains Initiative: UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced on Wednesday that the initiative, which is so important for the global economy, will be extended by 60 days. This is “good news for the world,” Guterres said.

The deal will now continue to ensure the shipment of millions of tons of grain and other foodstuffs from Ukraine across the Black Sea. Before Guterres, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced the extension.

The warring parties Ukraine and Russia, as well as Turkey and the United Nations as mediators, had haggled for weeks about extending the deadline beyond Thursday, May 18. Moscow’s emissaries kept stepping on the brakes – as they did in the previous negotiations on extensions.
