Hamburg The US delivery service Doordash will initially launch its own flag on the German market despite the planned takeover of the European provider Wolt. Doordash founder Andy Fang told Handelsblatt. Initially, the food delivery service will start this Wednesday in Stuttgart with 30 couriers. The German headquarters in Berlin should also be expanded. “Several dozen” people already worked there.

He wants to build a sustainable business in Germany, said Fang, who traveled to Stuttgart especially to start. He says nothing about a possible expansion of the restaurant delivery service into other German cities. Doordash currently has vacancies in Hamburg, Frankfurt, Munich and Cologne. However, Wolt is already active there.

The listed Doordash group announced last week that it would take over Wolt in the first half of 2022 for seven billion euros in shares. The Wolt brand should be retained and become the core of Doordash’s European expansion.

“We are planning international expansion as a project for the coming decade and beyond,” said Fang, emphasizing the staying power of the company, which is worth $ 83 billion on the stock exchange. The Wolt deal had recently boosted the share significantly.

Fang did not want to give details on the integration of Wolt in Germany. First, Doordash will advertise its own brand. Also from the Wolt environment it is said that both providers initially continued to pursue their previous plans independently until the merger was approved by the authorities.

The next partner could be nimble

Doordash works in Germany with drivers who are employed by partner companies and are supposed to earn 13 euros per hour. The fast delivery service Flink could also be integrated into the app in the medium term. Doordash had participated in the latest financing round from Berlin. This should result in a partnership, announced Fang.

The aim is to achieve a significant size in Germany in order to be able to work profitably. For this it is not crucial to replace the market leader Lieferando, said Fang. The market is still so underdeveloped that there is enough space for several players to grow. In addition to Wolt, Uber Eats and Delivery Hero have also launched in Germany in the past few months.
