When Jens Weidmann announced his withdrawal, top politicians from the SPD, the Greens and the FDP immediately started thinking about who could succeed the Bundesbank president. Various names for Weidmann’s line of succession are already in circulation, but the decision will be complex.
This is particularly due to the fact that a traffic light coalition has to decide on a number of other top jobs in the economy. Whether it is an expert council or a research institute: the new federal government will be involved in all decisions. That makes things particularly difficult, because the filling of one post results in restrictions for the others, be it through the economic thought of the chosen one or the gender.
