The number of Mexican refugees immigrating to the United States is increasing day by day. According to new reports that have emerged, the Pentagon has agreed to spend $52.2 million on the operation and maintenance of 18 spy balloons, known as Persistent Threat Detection Systems (PTDS) or aerostats for short. Usually equipped with high-capacity sensors and cameras, such blimps can reach heights of about 15,000 feet. They are also able to record ground activity in detail, as stated.
The Pentagon’s agreement, designed to assist the Department of Homeland Security, will finance the operation and maintenance of six 17-metre spy balloons belonging to the US Border Patrol and a dozen 22-metre balloons belonging to the Department of Defense. Therefore, having this network of spy balloons flying in the southern skies will help detect criminal activity at the border, especially drug trafficking.
While the limited domestic deployment of aerostats has actually been going on since the 1980s, similar balloons once played an important role in the Middle East as a US spy tool. Lockheed Martin’s website, which produces them, says dozens of balloons have been deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2003.
The bubble’s purpose will largely be to automate surveillance and intelligence operations, and to let US authorities know what’s going on in a given environment without having to deploy real people.
In the mid-2000s, when the use of spy balloons first began to appear in the mainstream media in the United States, comments were made that her shepherds in Kabul and Kandahar were greatly annoyed by the huge narcotic balloons flying over them all the time.
After years, researchers say similar types of spy balloons are now seeing more and more public use in the United States.
