Kiel The British economist and government advisor Lord Nicholas Stern calls for more leeway for national debt in order to combat climate change. “You can cut back on new debt when the technologies and disruptions in the fight against climate change have become widely available and the challenges have been overcome,” Stern said in an interview with Handelsblatt. The decisive factor now is to use the rebuilding after the corona crisis to invest in the future.
He warns against making the same mistakes after the corona crisis as after the global economic crisis. Politicians and companies should have directed the restarted investments in and after the crisis into new technologies to avoid CO2 emissions.
“At that time the change to a more sustainable system was not implemented. Instead, the debt rules from the EU’s Economic and Stability Pact were insisted on. We can’t make these mistakes again, ”criticizes the 75-year-old.
