Dusseldorf Headhunters hear it again and again: “Investment bankers like to call their colleagues their second family.” Which may be because they spend so much time together in the office. There they exchange views on IPOs, mergers, takeovers, capital increases and bonds. At best, investment bankers love data and numbers.
This is also reflected in the salary. Investment bankers usually earn a handsome sum in the first year and receive high bonuses if they are successful. But in order to be successful, applicants need certain characteristics: stress resistance, analytical thinking, a high work ethic – and for many years a rather low need for free time.
The Handelsblatt spoke to two headhunters about salaries and working conditions in investment banking. How to make a career there, what salary can be earned and why mathematicians rarely become investment bankers.
