new York The stumbling block is a math book: You can see a bar graph that measures racist attitudes and classifies them according to political identification. On another page of the book, a speech bubble explains that positive feelings and friends can also help you do math problems better.
It’s examples like these that many Florida Republicans see as unequivocal proof that their state’s textbooks are being politically infiltrated. Therefore, the responsible school authority has rejected 41 percent of the submitted math books for the coming school year.
Reason: They include “critical race theory” (the racist attitude thing), “social emotional learning” (the positive feelings thing), or other content banned in the state.
“The highest number in Florida history,” said Ron DeSantis, the state’s governor, happily at a specially scheduled press conference. “Mathematics is about the right answer, not about feelings or ideologies.”
