The long-awaited 5G service was launched today at the event held in Istanbul Airport, with the participation of Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Adil Karaismailoğlu. At the same time, it was said that the tender for 5G will take place at the beginning of 2023.
It was also stated that 2G has reached the end of its life. Of course, no one has been using this service for a long time. As a result of the 2G concession agreement signed in the late 90s Turkcell and Vodafone 2023, Turkish telecom can continue to be used until 2026. However, after today’s announcement, it was understood that the plug would be withdrawn before the specified dates.

Last April, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced Turkey’s 2053 vision. 5G and fiber internet infrastructures were also mentioned here. Accordingly, the 5G service, which will be implemented before the end of July, will spread to the whole country for the next 30 years.
Of course, the 2053 date can be misleading. Because in the next few years, it will start to spread in big cities with new pilot regions. Until 2030, it is expected to become widespread, although not as much as 4.5G. As stated, it may take 20-30 years to reach the most remote corner of Turkey.
