Wu Ken, China’s ambassador in Berlin, reacted indignantly to Germany’s plans to realign its China policy in an interview with the Handelsblatt. “The paper gives the impression that it is primarily guided by ideology. To me, this smells suspiciously of a Cold War mentality,” said the ambassador in an interview with the Handelsblatt newspaper about the federal government’s draft for a new China strategy. In his view, it is not about the common interests of Germany and China.

The federal government wants to realign cross-departmental relations with Beijing. According to the draft that has become known so far, under the leadership of Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens), a tougher approach towards China and more economic independence from the country are advocated.
