Geneva The World Trade Organization (WTO) has scrapped US tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. A three-member body of the organization ruled on Friday that the tariffs violated WTO rules and that the US would have to adjust its import rules for the metals. The USA immediately rejected the arbitral award of the WTO body and spoke of incorrect interpretations and conclusions.

The United States could appeal the decision. However, this would come to nothing, since the government in Washington has so far blocked the appointment of the WTO Appellate Body. The US has been pushing for reform of the World Trade Organization for years.

In 2018, then-President Donald Trump imposed tariffs of 25 percent on steel imports and 10 percent on aluminum. Trump cited a 1962 law that allows the president to restrict imports if they threaten national security. Several states took action against US regulations in the WTO.
