Berlin The results of the first round of the Czech presidential election had just been announced two weeks ago when billionaire Andrej Babis put up posters across the country promising not to drag the Czech Republic into the Ukraine war. The former head of government assured him that he was a diplomat, not a military man.

This set the topic for the runoff election, which will take place this Friday and Saturday. In the first lap, Babis was just behind his opponent Petr Pavel.

He may have retired as a general, but he is a military man through and through. He was the Czech chief of staff and until 2018 head of the military committee in the highest positions in NATO.

Battle for the liberal camp

The shrewd populist Babis tried to stop voters in the liberal camp from voting for Pavel. That is why his posters suggested that General a. D. Order mobilization and send Czechs to the Russian war against Ukraine.
