Ankara The Turkish President does not want war. Recep Tayyip Erdogan does not mean his own military actions, but an imminent Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“Turkey is ready to play any role to ease tensions between Russia and Ukraine,” Erdogan said through his spokesman. “We are doing this both as a friend of Russia and Ukraine and as a NATO ally.” Erdogan plans to visit Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in early February.

For weeks, the US, Germany and other countries have been trying to talk to Russia to prevent an invasion of Ukraine, which is feared given the deployment of more than 100,000 Russian soldiers on the border with Ukraine. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and his counterpart Sergey Lavrov only ended a crisis talks in Geneva on Friday without any visible success.
