Why trade with China is vital for Russia

Beijing, Riga Russian President Vladimir Putin admitted to his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping during his visit to Moscow that he was a bit “envious” of China’s colossal development progress. This also resonates: In view of the Western sanctions, Moscow is increasingly dependent on its largest trading partner.

Economic cooperation between the two countries therefore played an important role in the bilateral talks. Xi expressed hope that the two countries will make full use of the potential of large-scale infrastructure projects “to boost growth, jointly ensure our energy security and expand bilateral economic and trade exchanges,” the Chinese side said in an official statement.
