Berlin The equipment of the Iranian Air Force is ready for a museum. Many aircraft predate the 1979 Islamic Revolution, when the Shah’s regime received the machines from the United States. Since then, the Americans have stopped delivering weapons to Tehran. The Iranians also have a hard time getting hold of modern fighter jets.

Your last major purchase – around 40 Russian Mig-29 jets – was more than 30 years ago. But now a modernization push is imminent: After the delivery of Iranian combat drones to Russia for use in the Ukraine war, Moscow wants to retaliate by exporting new SU-35 combat aircraft. With the Russian reinforcements, the Iranian Air Force would be much more powerful.

The SU-35 would be delivered from March, said Iranian MP Shahriar Heidari of the Tasnim news agency, which is close to the powerful Revolutionary Guard. According to Tasnim, the Iranian Air Force can count on 24 new jets.
