Dusseldorf, Essen Galeria’s CEO, Miguel Müllenbach, was still spreading optimism during the biggest crisis. “Today we are laying the foundation for Galeria’s positive economic prospects,” he announced after the list of 52 stores to be closed was determined. “The department store in Germany thus has a future.”
But only a few share this optimism, both in their own company and in the industry. “The lists of which houses are closed and which are not are not at all consistent and comprehensible,” criticizes Gerrit Heinemann, trade expert at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences. “It looks like a patchwork quilt in locations that don’t make a homogeneous mesh.”
