Why retailers refuse to legalize containerization

Dusseldorf Justice Minister Marco Buschmann (FDP) and Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir (Greens) see it as an important building block in the fight against food waste: in a joint letter to the justice ministers of the federal states, they suggested legalizing so-called containers. It is “absurd”, said Özdemir, that people can be punished for taking usable food out of waste containers.

Anyone who secretly takes groceries from vendors’ bins can be prosecuted for doing so. Even the Federal Constitutional Court confirmed in the case of two students from Munich that taking discarded food with you is illegal.

The German retailers want it to stay that way. In a survey by the Handelsblatt, none of the major food retailers spoke out in favor of legalizing containers, not even organic retailers like Alnatura and Denree. You have objections to the change in the law – and propose alternatives.
