Why France is hesitating when it comes to supplying main battle tanks

Paris In early January, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the delivery of AMX-10 RC armored reconnaissance vehicles to Ukraine. A day after Macron, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) then agreed to hand over Marder armored personnel carriers to Kyiv.

In the meantime, it’s all about heavy battle tanks: In view of the growing pressure, Scholz has cleared the way for deliveries of Leopard 2 tanks, and the USA is sending the M1 Abrams. But now Macron of all people is hesitant to hand over the French counterpart Leclerc to the Ukrainian army.

The French government is officially examining a possible delivery. Macron said last Sunday during Scholz’s visit to the Élysée Palace: “Nothing is out of the question.” Behind the scenes, however, there is great skepticism in Paris.
