Frankfurt After the accident of the submersible “Titan”, which cost the lives of the five passengers, the focus is on the human tragedy. But the question remains: Who is ultimately liable if such an extreme trip goes wrong?

The “Titan” was with five people on board on the way to the wreck of the “Titanic” at a depth of around 3800 meters. Almost two hours after the start of the dive, contact with the mothership was lost. Several countries took part in the rescue operation: rescue robots, special ships, sonar devices, submarines and surveillance aircraft took part in the search. Ultimately, Oceangate, the company that operates the submersible, could only announce the deaths of the passengers.

Overall, the search will likely cost many millions of dollars, Chris Boyer, director of the National Association for Search and Rescue, told the New York Times. The crew was aware that they were in mortal danger and that the chances of rescue were slim.
