Berlin Despite German reunification more than 30 years ago, East and West were economically worlds apart for a long time. Many companies avoided the new federal states. But some countries are catching up – and a new study shows that this is likely to increase.

The Center for European Economic Research (ZEW) Mannheim has examined how attractive the individual federal states are for companies. The researchers looked at various indicators that play a role in the settlement and operation of companies, weighted and evaluated them.

The study focused on the areas of taxes, labor and human capital, financing, infrastructure and institutions. The result was a ranking with a detailed location comparison of the federal states – which brings surprising results to light. For an interactive chart with details for each state, see this article.
