Which candidates could succeed Weidmann?

One of the four could succeed Jens Weidmann at the helm of the Bundesbank.

Frankfurt The departure of Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann came as a surprise. As a reminder for regulatory principles, as a knowledgeable economist and as the head of a traditional central bank, he will leave a large void.

However, the first possible successors were immediately traded in public. Even if it is too early to make predictions about the outcome of the primarily political selection process, it is worth taking a look at possible candidates:

Isabel Schnabel

The economist, director of the European Central Bank (ECB) since 2020, was named as an obvious candidate immediately after Weidmann resigned. As a professor in Bonn, the 50-year-old managed to get young people excited about economic issues. Even before joining the ECB, she had made a name for herself as an expert on monetary policy issues, and she was also an “economic wizard” from 2014 to 2019.
