Berlin For months now, the federal government has been warning the German economy against engaging too intensively in China. Companies should not “put all their eggs in one basket”, as Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) repeatedly says. The reason is increasing geopolitical tensions with China. But as a new analysis published this week by the German Economic Institute (IW) shows, many German companies continue to rely entirely on the country.
“German companies are investing more in China than ever before,” according to the survey by IW foreign trade expert Jürgen Matthes. Accordingly, 11.5 billion euros flowed to China in 2022.
