Athens, London, Madrid, Paris A series of flight cancellations, record queues in front of check-in counters, stranded people: traveling on summer vacation is currently becoming a nightmare for many Europeans. Last weekend, North Rhine-Westphalia was the first German state to start the holidays, and Düsseldorf Airport promptly reported a state of emergency due to a lack of staff.

The federal government is now setting up an interdepartmental working group to fill the gaps at German airports with foreign employees as quickly as possible. For summer vacationers, however, this help will come too late.

The collapse of the airports is not a German phenomenon – in many European countries air travelers must have strong nerves right now. During the Corona years 2020 and 2021, airport operators and airlines fell into crisis, cut numerous jobs and grounded planes. Now that many people are catching up on their long-planned trips, there is a shortage of employees everywhere. The workers who were laid off at the time have long since found new jobs. What remains is an overwhelmed system.
