When will e-cars become cheaper than combustion engines?

Electric car versus combustion engine

Price parity has already been achieved for the first models.

Dusseldorf The prices for combustion and electric cars could already be at the same level for many models from 2025. “Price parity is possible at this point in time,” says Stefan Bratzel, Director of the Center of Automotive Management in Bergisch Gladbach.

The reason is CO2 targets, which will force car manufacturers to increase the proportion of their electric cars in their fleets by then. In addition, combustion engines must become even more efficient due to the Euro 7 emissions standard.

This combination could ensure that petrol and diesel cars will become more expensive in the coming years and that the high prices for electric cars will come ever closer. At the same time, electric cars could gradually become cheaper through increased competition, but also through government subsidy programs and slowly falling battery prices or the use of smaller batteries.

“The price curves are likely to meet at a high level,” predicts Karl-Thomas Neumann, an investor in the field of e-mobility and former Opel boss. This means that driving a car will become more expensive.
