On the way to climate neutrality: What the green conversion will cost.

The current climate protection law provides that Germany will be climate neutral by 2045. That would be five years earlier than originally planned. “Climate neutral” means that only as much greenhouse gas is emitted as can be absorbed by nature.

The European Union has also anchored its climate protection goals in law. As a first intermediate step, the EU countries are striving to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.

High investments are necessary for Germany to become climate neutral by 2045. By 2030 alone, the state, business and consumers will have to invest more than 850 billion euros in converting industry, transport, buildings and the energy sector. These graphics show what Germany has to do on the way to climate neutrality.

On the Industrial sector in Germany, costs amount to 52 billion euros. The graphic shows the cost blocks and introduces the most important government funding instruments.
