Dusseldorf Axel Freimuth recently conjured up a five-course menu in his kitchen. The rector of the University of Cologne regularly invites important donors and committed personalities to his home for a chat – “as a sign of special appreciation”, as Freimuth says.

But it is just as important to the 64-year-old that he can continue to guarantee the independence of his university. He therefore knows exactly who is funding how much. His university received 119.35 million euros in third-party funds in 2021, most of which came from the German Research Foundation, around 3.37 million euros from industry.
