Humanity’s greatest problems will be solved by the next generation of leaders. But often many intelligent people don’t realize its potential to have a global impact. Many are never discovered, isolated at a young age, lacking opportunities to develop their ideas, or face social and economic barriers. Organized by Schmidt Futures and the Rhodes Foundation, Rise is a program that finds smart people around the world who need an opportunity and supports them for life in their work to serve humanity. Rise Global contributes to the efforts to find solutions to the important problems of humanity by providing support, including scholarships, career services and fundraising opportunities, to young people aged 15-17.

Incorporating more than 150,000 people from 170 countries into its community, Rise has so far selected 200 winners from 69 countries who showcase their acumen in areas ranging from making education more accessible to developing tools to reduce global warming and better detect cancer.

What are the winners offered?

Those who qualify for the Rise Global list benefit from the following opportunities.

  • Settlement Summit: A fully funded three-week placement summit with other members of the Rise Global Winners community.
  • Global Winners Network: Access to the Rise Global Winners network to meet in common interests, make service commitments, launch initiatives and collaborate.
  • Counseling and Career Support: Advice and support in applying to university and choosing a career.
  • Programming: Access to specialized programs, courses and other opportunities through Rise partners.
  • Higher Education Scholarships: A need-based, four-year higher education scholarship at any accredited university that covers tuition and living expenses and is currently not covered by any financial aid.
  • Technology: A technology package to be determined annually, such as a laptop or tablet.

Candidates who are not selected to Rise Global’s 100 list can benefit from some of Rise’s services just by applying. Applicants to the global Rise network, even if they do not win, free online courses and partner-edited opportunities can access.

  • Partner Network: Pairing with programs, middle and high school scholarships, internships and other benefits of partners within the Rise network.
  • Funding Opportunities: Apply for funding, from start-up support to start a social enterprise to a grant for a nonprofit, to experiment with innovative ideas that address serious issues in local communities or around the world.
  • Education Support: Applying for scholarship funds for a master’s degree.

Who can apply, what is required from applicants?

Candidates who want to apply for the 2023 Rise Global Challenge, Must be between the ages of 15-17 as of July 1, 2023. Apart from that, it does not make any difference in which country the applicants live, where they come from, their education level, which fields they are interested in.

How will the winners be chosen in the 2023 Rise Global Challenge?

There are three stages in this process.

  • Delivery: Among other activities, applicants introduce themselves through videos, create an individual project that showcases their talents and benefits to their community, and peer-review other applicants’ projects.
  • Interview: Up to 500 Finalists selected by Rise are eligible to participate in “Finalist Days” where they showcase their motivation, problem-solving abilities and teamwork skills in an innovative interview format.
  • Selection of global winners: Among the Finalists, Rise selects 100 Global Winners to whom it will support for life in its efforts to serve humanity.

What projects did 8 Turks who were elected last year undersigned?

  • Adanur Nas (Diyarbakir): Adanur has designed a website and application that voices important phrases for students with hearing impairment. He also prepared a booklet, held conferences at his school, and gave robotics lessons to hearing-impaired children.
  • Dila Öner (Istanbul): Dila designed a free audiobook website for visually impaired students and founded a book club.
  • Efe Sakarya (Diyarbakir): Efe has developed a device to measure and reduce the toxicity level caused by the algae system and hydrogen sulfide.
  • Elif Naz Yilmaz (Istanbul): Elif founded the Broken Hearts Movement, which gives free seminars to minority groups on the importance of mental health, and launched an NFT collection to raise funds.
  • Emrullah Dorukhan Cakir (Istanbul): Emrullah designed a role-playing game based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder to practice their planning skills.
  • İdil Doga Turkmen (Mersin): To pave the way for future space exploration, Idil developed a method for collecting space junk with the help of an electromagnet and the moon’s gravity.
  • Lütfi Heysem Kiziloglu (Istanbul): Lütfü has developed an application that includes cities in its efforts to instill a love of nature in children and to create more natural spaces that will support health.
  • Zeynep İpek Kayali (Istanbul): İpek created the Ever-Changing Tree, a short story and illustrations that help young people with mental health problems understand that change is a natural part of our lives.

How to apply for the 2023 Rise Global Challenge?

Applications for the 2023 Rise Global Challenge can be made through Rise’s own website. Applications, 25 January 2023 to 19.59 CEST will continue to be received.

Those who do not have mobile technology can apply on paper form through Rise’s partners in the field. The application allows applicants to select projects that best suit their interests, skills and available time.
