Frankfurt All property owners in Germany must submit a new property tax return by October 31st. And many groan under the complicated data entry via Elster, the online portal of the financial administration.
The declaration is necessary because the property tax for all 36 million properties in Germany has to be recalculated. This has been decided by the Federal Constitutional Court. To do this, data about the property must be transmitted electronically to the tax offices. With the exception of Bavaria and Lower Saxony, submission using paper forms is only permitted in cases of hardship.
What some people don’t know: the data has to be sent via Elster, but you don’t necessarily have to use the portal yourself. There are some offers and tools on the market that make data collection easier and more understandable, and some of them are even free of charge. From 99 euros, the declaration of said tools is even checked by a tax consultant. The Handelsblatt presents seven alternatives to Elster and shows their advantages and disadvantages.
