Irregular Rhythm Notifications

The irregular rhythm notification feature on your Apple Watch occasionally looks at your heartbeat to check for an irregular rhythm that could suggest atrial fibrillation (AFib). Irregular rhythm notifications use the optical heart sensor to detect a wrist pulse and look for variability in heartbeat-to-beat intervals while the user is resting.

If the algorithm repeatedly detects an irregular rhythm suggestive of AFib, you receive a notification and the date, time and heart rate are recorded in the Health app.

AFib is a type of irregular heart rhythm in which the upper chambers of the heart are not in sync with the lower chambers. Some people with AFib do not have any symptoms. Others experience symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, palpitations, fatigue or shortness of breath. In a clinical study using the FDA-approved patch ECG as the reference device, the latest irregular rhythm reporting feature showed 88.6 percent sensitivity and 99.3 percent detectability.

ECG Application

With the EKG app, users experiencing symptoms such as a fast or skipped heartbeat can capture an ECG and record their symptoms. The ECG app uses the electric heart sensor and rear crystal built into the Digital Crown to record a single-lead ECG. The ECG app then provides the result of sinus rhythm, atrial fibrillation, high pulse atrial fibrillation, inconclusive or poor recording and prompts the user to enter symptoms such as fast or fluttering heartbeat, dizziness or fatigue.

The recorded waveform, results, date, time and any symptoms are saved and can be exported as PDF from the Health app to share with a clinician.

In a clinical study using a 12-lead ECG as the reference device, the ECG application demonstrated 99.3 percent accuracy in classifying sinus rhythm and 98.5 percent sensitivity in classifying AFib for classifiable results.

Cardio Fitness

Cardio Fitness provides a VO2 Max estimate, or your body’s ability to take in oxygen during exercise. In the past, this was typically only measured for endurance athletes or – on the other side of the spectrum – people with serious conditions like Heart Failure. These tests are typically done in the clinic and can be quite intense for the average person.

However, the American Heart Association recognizes that VO2 Max is a powerful indicator of overall health, and we are excited to bring this technology to all users. Apple Watch can give you a scientifically validated VO2 Max estimate, even at lower levels of exercise, to learn about your overall health.

Users can even choose to receive notifications if their classification falls to “low” in relation to their risk of serious long-term health conditions. Fortunately, this is something you can improve by exercising more often or harder and easily follow along along the way.

Afib History

We recently announced AFib History, which estimates how long your heart has been showing signs of AFib. This is important because research has shown that time spent in AFib can be associated with severity of symptoms, quality of life issues, and risk of complications.

AFib History also allows users to track certain life factors that can affect time spent on AFib, such as sleep, exercise, and weight.—Historically, there has not been an easy way to track AFib overtime or compare it to key life factors. Now you can do this simply by wearing an Apple Watch.

AFib History was verified in a clinical study with participants wearing both an Apple Watch and an FDA-approved reference device. This study showed that the average difference in weekly measurements between the Apple Watch and the reference device was less than 1%.
