Berlin Germany slides into an economic crisis. “We are at the beginning of a recession that could get worse than many currently want to believe,” says economist Jens Südekum. Deutsche Bank is already expecting an economic slump of 3.5 percent next year.
Unlike in the past, however, an economic crash does not lead to lower prices, but to higher and higher prices. This is mainly due to the high energy costs. Many citizens ask themselves whether they will still be able to pay their next utility bill.
In view of this situation, one thing is clear: politicians must act. But which measures work best? The chaos in the gas levy shows how difficult it is for the federal government to deal with the crisis.
The Handelsblatt has asked Germany’s top economists which measures the federal government is now launching and which they should rather keep their hands off.
