‘Weird’ Price Comparison by BOTAŞ Created Controversy

Announcing a huge hike in natural gas last night, the post made by BOTAŞ the previous day drew reaction from the social media. Because BOTAŞ was comparing the natural gas prices in Turkey and Europe in TL in this post.

While natural gas prices continue to increase all over the world due to the Ukraine-Russia crisis, another huge hike was made in Turkey last night. Petroleum Pipeline Corporation (BOTAŞ)in the announcement it shared yesterday, announced that 35% increase in residences, 50% increase in industry and 44.3% increase in natural gas in electricity generation facilities.

While the huge price hike gathered reactions in a short time in Turkey, a visual shared by BOTAŞ the day before the news of the hike was brought to the agenda on Twitter after the price hikes. In that image shared on March 30, BOTAŞ Comparison of natural gas prices in European capitals was doing. Oddly enough, the comparison in TL was happening.

BOTAŞ comparison:

The price per cubic meter of natural gas in the housing tariffs was listed per TL in the said share, which was seen above and closed to comments like other posts. Prices per cubic meter according to the data converted to TL by BOTAŞ from the Energy Price Index. 34.78 TL in Amsterdam, 29.31 TL in Berlin, 17.82 TL in London, 24.77 TL in Rome, 17.12 TL in Sofia and 2.81 TL in Ankara was.. so Turkey was shown as the country with the cheapest natural gas in TL terms.. But the thing to remember was that Europe did not switch to the Turkish Lira…

Unit prices in Europe were as follows:

The Energy Price Index February 2022 report, which is the source of BOTAŞ and lists the European capitals, showed the price of natural gas per kilowatt-hour in the capitals as c€ (euro cents). In the image above, Amsterdam, the place with the highest natural gas prices when converted to TL, was in the second place in this list. The price of gas per kilowatt hour in Amsterdam 21,12 euro cents was. This is one cubic meter, that is, 10.55 kWh of natural gas. 2.22 euros meant it was. BOTAŞ, converting this number to TL He shared it on Twitter. The natural gas tariffs in the mentioned provinces, which are not in TL and priced in their own currency, were as follows:

  • Amsterdam – 2.22 euro/cubic meter
  • Berlin – 1.87 euro/cubic meter
  • Rome – 1.67 euro/cubic meter
  • London – 1.14 euro/cubic meter
  • Sofia – 1.09 euro/cubic meter

If we follow the same logic as BOTAŞ, the minimum wage table is as follows…

botas minimum wage

In Italy, there is no minimum wage set by the government, instead the minimum wage can be set individually by the unions.
