“We plan to phase out coal by 2028”

EnBW wants to take the last coal-fired power plants off the grid in 2028.

Dusseldorf On April 15, the Baden-Württemberg energy group EnBW will also complete the nuclear phase-out – and take the last reactor, Neckarwestheim 2, off the grid. The new CEO Andreas Schell already has the next exit in mind, as he explained in an interview with the Handelsblatt.

Mr. Schell, your predecessor Frank Mastiaux aligned EnBW in the direction of the energy revolution, investing billions in wind and solar parks. Despite this, 45 percent of the energy that your company sells or distributes still comes from coal-fired power generation. So it’s not quite as green as EnBW is selling itself. Are you finally going to change that?
EnBW has already increased the share of renewable energies from almost 19 to over 40 percent in recent years. But they don’t change energy production overnight. However, we believe we can accelerate the coal phase-out.
