Shanghai The new battery plant planned in Canada will be Volkswagen’s largest in the world. A manager familiar with the process told Handelsblatt that the maximum production capacity will be 90 gigawatt hours (GWh). That’s enough to power more than a million electric cars a year.

VW announced in mid-March it would build a battery factory in St. Thomas, Ontario. According to information from the Handelsblatt, the group will specify the plans on Friday. On Friday, the management of the battery unit PowerCo will meet with Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Ontario to announce crucial details of his new cell plant in the province, according to corporate circles.

On Sunday, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will also travel to Canada for a state visit lasting several days and will also meet VW boss Oliver Blume there, as the Handelsblatt learned in advance. It is Steinmeier’s first trip to Canada as Federal President. According to the official agenda, he will meet local business representatives, among others.
