Dusseldorf, Stuttgart It’s a partnership among giants. Volkswagen and Bosch announced on Tuesday that they will jointly develop the software for automated driving in the future. Europe’s largest car manufacturer and the world’s largest automotive supplier are reaching for a future billion-dollar market. “Together with Cariad, we are now accelerating the market launch of partially and highly automated driving functions in all vehicle classes, making them available to everyone,” said Bosch CEO Markus Heyn.

Volkswagen subsidiary Cariad and Bosch initially put 1,000 specialists together on software development. The first functions that allow the driver to temporarily take their hands off the steering wheel are to be installed in vehicles as early as 2023.

With the cooperation, VW and Bosch are establishing a new standard in the cooperation between car manufacturers and suppliers. The times when car manufacturers bought complete systems from their suppliers and installed them in their vehicles are coming to an end. VW and Bosch speak of a “partnership at eye level”.
