Von der Leyen rejects timetable for Ukraine’s EU accession

EU leaders demonstrate in Kyiv in support of Ukraine

At a meeting in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, top representatives of the European Union expressed their support for the country in the war against Russia. The EU’s determination will not falter, Council President Charles Michel tweeted on Friday, apparently after his arrival in Kyiv. “We will support (Ukraine) every step of the way towards the EU.”

Michel, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and 15 EU Commissioners wanted to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, among others, as part of the EU-Ukraine summit. The last summit of this kind took place in Kyiv in October 2021 – a few months before the start of the war. The highly symbolic visit also marks the EU’s first political mission to a country at war.
