The wave of ATM demolitions will not decrease in 2023 either. In the first seven weeks of this year there were already around 70. In the whole of 2022 there were almost 500 attacks.

Frankfurt The number of ATMs continues to shrink. Because Germans pay in cash less often, Volks- und Raiffeisenbanken dismantled around 1,800 ATMs in 2021 and 2022, as confirmed by the BVR industry association. The number dropped to 15,520 at the end of last year. That corresponds to a drop of a good ten percent.

The Savings Banks, market leaders in business with private customers, have also significantly reduced ATMs for the first time. In 2021, the number fell by about 1,034 to 21,582, Bundesbank figures show. More recent data are not yet available.

According to the savings bank lobby association DSGV, the number of machines had previously remained stable at around 23,000 for several years. Because of the significant cuts in the ATM network, the Bundesbank is already concerned about the supply of cash in Germany.
