Istanbul, Bangkok Only four countries clearly sided with Russia in the UN General Assembly vote on Ukraine: Belarus and Syria, North Korea and Eritrea voted against the resolution calling for an end to Russia’s “aggression”.

Tiny compared to 141 supporters of the resolution. But the group of countries that support Russia in the Ukraine war, at least to some extent, or do not take a clear position against the invasion, is by no means that small.

Even if the approval of the resolution in the UN General Assembly was extremely clear, 34 countries did not follow it by abstaining. Twelve countries disagreed.

While the EU and the US, as well as some other Western countries, have imposed far-reaching sanctions on Russia, some states are guided by their deep political and economic ties – or even welcome anything that harms the US or NATO.
