Beijing The shooting down of the suspected Chinese surveillance balloon by US fighter jets further exacerbates the diplomatic crisis between China and the US. The flying object hovered over US territory for several days. The US accuses China of spying. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected the allegations and condemned the shooting down as a “clear overreaction”. China reserves the right to “necessary responses”.

According to US President Joe Biden, he found out about the balloon on Wednesday and immediately ordered it to be shot down “as soon as possible”. In order to rule out any risk to people from falling debris, the shooting took place on Saturday evening European time off the coast of South Carolina. The US military is recovering the object.
