Washington The US Senate has passed a $1.7 trillion budget bill that will ensure continued aid to Ukraine and federal funding through September 2023. Senators passed the bill to the House of Representatives by a vote of 68 to 29 on Thursday, a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky delivered a speech to Congress.
The 4,155-page law provides, among other things, $772.5 billion for programs in the United States and $858 billion for defense. Shortly before the vote, Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer spoke of one of the most important budget decisions in a long time. “The range of people it helps is wide.”
Aid of 44.9 billion US dollars is planned for Ukraine: The package includes around 9 billion dollars for military aid in favor of Ukraine and almost 16 billion dollars for economic and humanitarian aid.
In addition, twelve billion dollars are planned to replenish the US military’s ammunition stocks and stores after deliveries to Ukraine. Another seven billion dollars are earmarked for additional spending by US troops in Europe.

The budget is intended to finance government business until September next year. The deadline for the adoption of the draft budget expires on Friday. If no new budget has been passed in Congress and signed by the President by then, a so-called shutdown would be imminent.

If that were to happen, government employees, for example, would have to be placed on forced leave or work temporarily without pay. Before the vote, there was a nail-biter in the Senate because of a much-criticized deportation regulation. Ultimately, however, the package received a cross-party majority.
