US sanctions put Chinese chip companies under pressure

Beijing, Munich The Chinese government is silent: not a single high-ranking politician has yet commented on America’s massive sanctions against the People’s Republic’s chip industry. Nothing should distract from the demonstration of power by state and party leader Xi Jinping at the party congress, which runs until Saturday.

Apparently nobody in China has an interest in drawing attention to “a setback for a central goal of the party” during the most important meeting of the political elite, says Jordan Schneider from the US think tank Rhodium. Because the US export controls are a heavy blow to the scientific and technological ambitions of the Chinese Communist Party.

In his grand opening speech, Xi repeatedly stressed that China wants to become even “more independent and stronger in science and technology.” Xi did not address the recent attack from the United States. The semiconductor industry is considered a key sector for future technologies such as autonomous driving or artificial intelligence.
