US government doubts Schwesig going it alone on controversial Nord Stream Foundation

Berlin, Brussels After the dispute over the delivery of battle tanks to Ukraine, the next controversy in transatlantic relations flared up. The topic is the controversial “MV climate and environmental protection” foundation, which was used to build the Nord Stream 2 Baltic Sea pipeline and will also concern the Bundestag this week.

The official description of Germany so far is: The state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania founded the climate foundation on its own initiative. But the US government does not believe this is credible, as insiders report to the Handelsblatt.

Before the Russian attack on Ukraine, the climate foundation was also considered by the German government to be an “appropriate” instrument to ward off US sanctions, says a diplomat who is familiar with the talks between the Americans and Berlin at the time. The founding of the foundation was “at least tolerated” by the government of ex-Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU).
