Berlin Economics Ulrike Malmendier suggests leaving the remaining three German nuclear power plants connected to the grid longer than planned. “We now know that the winter of 2023/2024 will not necessarily be any easier,” said the economist from the US University of Berkeley to the Handelsblatt.

“That’s why it’s important to exhaust all possibilities, and that’s where nuclear power plants come in,” explained Malmendier. The federal government should not postpone this decision again so that the operators can prepare for it and procure new fuel rods. The Emsland, Neckarwestheim 2 and Isar 2 nuclear power plants are scheduled to be shut down in April 2023.

With a view to economic development, Malmendier is particularly concerned about the rapidly increasing number of corona infections in China. “The supply chains will collapse again,” said the economist, who has been a member of the Advisory Council since the summer. Germany therefore needs a “China protection crash course”.
