Berlin Several Ukrainian soldiers are walking down a paved road, heavily armed and carrying backpacks and sleeping mats on their backs. The houses along the road are partially destroyed, branches and rubble lie on the asphalt. The roads on the geolocated video are said to show those of Staryi Karavan, a town about ten kilometers northeast of Sloviansk in the Donbass. A city that was still occupied by Russia until a few days ago.

The US think tank “Institute for the Study of War” (ISW) concludes from the presence of the Ukrainian soldiers and the fact that they can apparently walk through the streets unmolested that the counter-offensive around the embattled city of Sloviansk was successful. It was a key target of the Russian offensive in Donbass after the Luhansk region fell almost entirely to Russia in early July.
