Moscow reacts cautiously to talks between Kiev and Beijing

Russia reacted cautiously to the first telephone call on the war in Ukraine between China’s party and state leader Xi Jinping and President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev. “We are ready to welcome anything that brings an end to the conflict and the achievement of all the goals set by Russia,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, according to the Russian state news agency TASS on Thursday. For example, Russia is demanding that Ukraine refrain from joining NATO because the nuclear power sees its security threatened as a result.

Even after a visit by Xi Jinping to Moscow in March, the Russian leadership was open to Beijing’s efforts to bring about a ceasefire and peace negotiations. After Zelenskyy’s phone call with Xi, the prominent Russian foreign politician Leonid Slutsky criticized the fact that Kiev was sticking to its positions and refusing a ceasefire. Xi announced that he would send a special envoy to Ukraine and other countries to discuss a political solution with all parties.
